King Tubby

Most people when they think of “Dub” music usually imagine some first pumping shit disco electronica in an early 90’s club. Dub music originally evolved from Reggae in the late 60’s and early 70’s. King Tubby, while working as a disc cutter for producer Duke Reid in 1968, was asked to create instrumental versions of songs by stripping out the vocals via the mixing deck. Through this process, King Tubby realized he could tweak and alter the instrumental tracks by adding reverb, echoes, phases and shifting the emphasis on certain instrumental tracks.
These early “remixes” by King Tubby and other Dub pioneers like Lee “Scratch” Perry are often seen as the origin of the “REMIX.” Most listeners of remixes today are unaware that these techniques started with Jamaican Rocksteady and Reggae.

Carnival of Light

Being the Beatles fanatic that I am, I thought I knew every post 1965 released or un-released song they recorded. I was wrong. It seems that a song called “Carnival of Light” which has never been heard outside of the Beatles inner circle, might be released to the public.
From Pitchfork:
The reason for keeping “Carnival of Light” from the fans, it seems, is that every Beatle but McCartney thought the tune was too adventurous.” According to the Guardian, the Cage- and Stockhausen-influenced tune was called “one of those weird things” by Beatles producer Sir George Martin, who recalls, “It was a kind of uncomposed, free-for-all melange of sound that went on. It was not considered worthy of issuing as a normal piece of Beatles music at the time and was put away.” Apparently, the track is a “jumble of shrieks and psychedelic effects” that “features the sound of gargled water and strangled shouts from [John] Lennon which vie with church organs and distorted guitar.”

Spud Nation Vol. 2: Air Dust Cowboy
“Air Dust Cowboy” By Spud (aka Sly)
Air dusters are the sweetest office supply known to man. I recently went into the supply room to track down my favorite paper clips, when I found the cabinet of air dusters. The solid aluminum cooled my fingertips as I cleaned my keyboard inside and out. But on a slow day, after I had viewed the complete collection of Sports Illustrated swimsuit thumbnail pics, my eyes wandered back to the metal can.

Over the past two weeks (I blame the air dusters for my tardiness), I couldn’t put down the air duster. I made a holster with my Blackberry case and now I’m called the Air Dust Cowboy. I love my nickname and I love my air dusters.
Lets say you’re having a bad hair day, grab the air duster and perm yourself. The sun is shining and you’re feeling hot, air dust yourself. Pesky boss is breathing down your neck, air dust her away. Wanna tickle your girlfriends feet without having to move, air dust them. Have a photo shoot and you need to nip out, air dust ‘em. Afternoon swamp ass, just air dust yourself—you too can be the Air Dust Cowboy.
I read the other day that air dusters are terrible for the environment, and that put me in a tough position. At first I thought I’d stop being the Air Dust Cowboy, but I decided to use greencicles instead!

Yours Truly,
Spud
The Gravitron

Does anyone remember The Gravitron from creepy carnivals of years past? I certainly do. There was nothing like entering the Gravitron and seeing the weird fucked up guy in the center spinning techno music. “WELCOME TO THE GRAVITROOOON!!!!”
Beatles Video Game

From Rolling Stone:
This game will take you on a journey from the Beatles first album Please Please Me until the last album at Abbey Road,” said Apple Corps CEO Jeff Jones. “It will span samples of the whole catalogue all the way through.” The three companies would not clarify whether Beatles content would be available for Rock Band or whether the game would feature avatars of John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr. “The project is a fun idea which broadens the appeal of the Beatles and their music,” McCartney said in a statement. “I like people having the opportunity to get to know the music from the inside out.”
